Reliable Sources

Almost every Sunday before or during reading the NY Times on Amazon's Kindle I watch Reliable Sources on CNN w/ Howard "Howie" Alan Kurtz. (born August 1, 1953) is an American journalist and author with a special focus on the media. He is host of CNN's Reliable Sources program, and Washington bureau chief for The Daily Beast. He is the former media writer for The Washington Post. He has written five books about the media. He has been described as the nation's "most influential media reporter".

Since 1998 Kurtz has been the host of the weekly CNN program Reliable Sources, a cable television program that explores the standards, performance and biases of the media. Kurtz leads the scrutinizing of the media's fairness and objectivity by questioning journalists of top news organizations, including those at CNN. The show premiered in 1992 when it originated as a one hour special to discuss the media's coverage of the Persian Gulf War.

His books remind me of the type I read in my "Mass Media" classes studied @ Penn State University (Main Campus): Media Circus: The Trouble with America's Newspapers; Hot Air: All Talk, All the Time; Spin Cycle: Inside them Clintons & their Propaganda Machine; The Fortune Tellers: Inside Wall Street's Game of Money, Media and Manipulation; Reality Show: Inside the Last Great Television News War.

Aside from Red Eye w/ Bill Schulz & Greg Gutfeld Reliable Sources is up there w/ being the best of smart & savvy TV = "good stuff" ...

This morning on Reliable Sources Howard used the term "New Media" in a conversation about the huge FaceBook IPO and how FaceBook and New Media are turning people on to content otherwise traditionally held and delivered by Newspapers, Magazines and TV NEWS from traditional journalists. The discussion plainly stated that FaceBook redefines the meaning of "friend" and New Media is redefining how content is delivered, shared and received.

One of the guests suggested that getting NEWS from friends is an old concept and, however unfortunate or, fortunate, I guess, is simply how some people just get there NEWS and are informed. He continued that New Media is a way for individuals to pull-up on their own the "good stuff" they want and to ignore the content traditional media sources deem "newsworthy" for our consumption and deliver to us everyday.

The topic came to close w/ Howard Kurtz referring to traditional content providers of newsworthy status as "the Dinosaur Media."

HO!

In Monitoring the Media, the conversation then turned to the current case of overzealous gossip used as reporting in a story about Yale QB Patrick Witt and his Rhodes scholarship withdrawal. Howie connected how failing to know all the facts and just going on suspicion and gossip is beyond irresponsible for a so called credible NEWS outlet as it basically just slandered some one's reputation on a national level - or how many of us still read the NY Times. Yes, the NY Times has backed off its scandalous account but, hey, the damage is done.

Sure it's easy to believe that an athlete like a Yale QB could be accused of a violent assault of an unwelcomed perverted sexual nature --- (I know as a young student I wouldn't take a ride from a wrestling coach and I still wouldn't as a grown man) but one would think that a credible NEWS source like the NY Times is more responsible in reporting - and not just dealing gossip for a catchy headline to make a quick buc!

What's the message here?

Logic is a useful tool to know in the world of computing and computing power --- however, to really empower one's self in this world of New Media is to know the other type of logic taught by philsophers and attorneys that can view stories, content, articles and recognize "the Straw Man" and "the Bandwagon" and "the Slippery Slope" and "the Appeal to Celebrity" arguments.

I mean, if more and more we're accepting content shared by our friends on FaceBook and Twitter (or on the front porch or in the school parking lot, Starbucks, the club) as NEWS then don't you want to recognize an agenda driven piece to determine if something is just paltry, petty gossip or something actually newsworthy and credible from Reliable Sources?. ..

Americans in Paris

A great book = enlightening, elating & helps cast off the veil on human potential that's more than just newsworthy but capable of incredible heights which become part of the tapestry of our own history (like Martin Eden by Jack London = you're almost frightened by the raw blinding truth once the veil is cast off). .. Wow, a good thing. Good things. The book is called The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris

Dear Greg, it's time for the new everyday media's roses for an anchor segment.

Karin Chetry received a dozen roses from a Mr. John French and the new everyday media (+ his strawhat$$$.com) once @ FNC + once @ CNN for a total of two times and two dozen --- FNC's Megyn Kelly has also received a dozen as well.

Out of Kimberly and Dana which one do you think I should have roses delivered to @ FNC's offices c/o The Five? If it's Kimberly place your right hand on your chin w/ you index finger casually pointing @ Kimberly while simultaneously your right leg is crossed over your left knee and the big toe of your right foot is pointing to Kimberly as well --- and if it's Dana then place your left hand over your chin and use pointer finger to nonchalantly point @ Dana while simultaneously your left leg is crossed over the right knee and your left foot is in a pilates point to Dana.

And, yes, still working on e-book New Media Madness: an everyday art and looking at @ St. Valentine's Day launch (or, around there = it's a real masterpiece and thanks for your editorial guidance like you did @ E.T.).

I knew San Francisco would upset the Saints (I called that to my wife). .. And No surpises that Brady & the boys picked apart Timbo and the Broncos.

The Big Surprise?!?! I'm totally digging what Keyshawn Johnson is wearing on Sunday NFL Countdown for the 15th of January 2012.

The suit is a total classic and something you can wear to the Duquesne Club for a World Affairs Council luncheon or to a gala for...

However, here's where Keyshawn Johnson "pops" and takes everyday tradition to the next level of savvy & smart = that shirt & tie combo w/ the classic suit is "key" for setting ones-self apart from the herd and says, "I am not a robot who just falls in-line and just gives up all their rights in exchange for services and a promise to be taken care of. .. I am a trailblazer. a good man & leader". ..

Please don't dominate the rap, jack, if youve got nothing new to say.
If you please, dont back up the track this trains got to run today.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
I heard someone say better run away, others say better stand still.

Now I dont know, but I been told its hard to run with the weight of gold,
Other hand I have heard it said, its just as hard with the weight of lead.

Who can deny, who can deny, its not just a change in style?
One step down and another begun and I wonder how many miles.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
Things went down we dont understand, but I think in time we will.
Now, I dont know but I was told in the heat of the sun a man died of cold.
Keep on coming or stand and wait, with the sun so dark and the hour so late.
You cant overlook the lack, jack, of any other highway to ride.
Its got no signs or dividing lines and very few rule to guide.

I saw things getting out of hand, I guess they always will.
Now I dont know but I been told
If the horse dont pull you got to carry the load.
I dont know whose backs that strong, maybe find out before too long.

One way or another, one way or another,
One way or another, this darkness got to give.

I done spent my last three cents
Mailing my letter to the president
I didn't make a show, i didn't make a dent
So i'm swinging over to this independent gent
Stetson kennedy
Writing his name in
I cain't win out to save my soul
Long as smathers-dupont's got me in the hole
Them war profit boys are squawking and balking
That's what's got me out here walking and talking
Knocking on doors and windows
Wake up and run down election morning
And scribble in stetson kennedy
I ain't the world's best writer nor the world's best speller
But when i believe in something i'm the loudest yeller
If we fix it so's you can't make money on war
We'll all forget what we're killing folks for

Science Shows Global Consciousness Peaked Hrs. Before Plane(s) Hit on 9/11: (explains my stirring premonition, conclusion, prayers)

This is not surprising for me as I can easily entertain that "time" is not the pounding beat behind it all in the universe. In fact, sometimes I can easily see that time was an invention of man to march to man's decree(s) and for fashionable, sporting men & women to purchase a piece like a Catier and state to everybody "yes, I got the time, you see."

Laird Hamilton once explained to Eddie Vedder that he can successfully surf the big wave with help of a song that he's "been into" at that time of his life in which he listens to over and over and over again = and when he's conquering the big wave (or "riding it") he pulls-up that song that he's played over and over again over his stereo and within his mind and he uses this to "slow down" time so that he then "has time to do his thing."

Sure, it may be easier for one to understand the NeuroScientists and Theoretical Physicists than the stoned language of surfer-boy, Laird Hamilton, who dropped out of high school and wears flip-flops like all-the-time. .. So, let's not change course but rather depictions. .. (Prediction, prediction = what's your depiction?). ..

New research is discovering that thoughts can fly across space and that we all may be part of a global consciousness. Scientifically, a sixth ...
This gentleman below and his random number generator discovered that human consciousness (people sitting next to the machine and paying attention to its function) has an effect on the numbers being randomly generated. He began a network of colleagues around the world with these machines running every second of everyday and reporting back to a main server in his lab where he analyzes the data and levels of global consciousness around the globe.

9/11 was one event that had the highest level of global consciousness (awareness and thoughts).

However, what is really interesting is that this peak in global consciousness began well before (4:30am)that first plane hit lower Manhattan in an act of terror by bad, violent, evil men (fundalmentalists).

This helps explain why after midnite I was stirred out of my bed (out of sleep) and was compelled to wrap a blanket about my shoulders and torso and stand out on the front porch = perched, looking at the moon. I actually didn't find this act peculiar but rather the moon in front of me and the energy I was feeling all around. I came to the conclusion that no matter what evil men think and do to try and extinguish good in humankind by violent measures and decrees that light will always prevail. Light and life will go on.

Twitter Accounts Suspended & Deleted and The LA Times Sunday Conversation = Another Week of New Media Madness: "an everyday art" Right Here. ..

Maybe the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are truly a team and do not like to have one of its cheerleaders gaining more attention than the others? Whatever the case the end result is that Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Melissa Kellerman found instant internet fame when she was knocked down on the sideline by tight end Jason Witten during the team's game against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.

When Kellerman’s Twitter account was suspended soon after she tweeted about the incident, reports spread that it was a move by the Dallas Cowboys. However, Cowboys’ director of public relations Rich Dalrymple said Kellerman was not forced by the team to delete her account.

"The Cowboys organization does not get involved in the administering of twitter accounts for players or cheerleaders," Rich Dalrymple told The Hollywood Reporter.
Dalrymple added that "Melissa made her own decisions regarding her account over the weekend." On Monday, Kellerman’s account was reactivated, but her Tweets are now protected.

"The Dallas Cowboys might accidentally tackle cheerleaders on the sidelines, but they would never tackle a DCC's twitter account," she wrote. "Cowboys did not 'force' me to deactivate. I chose to spend the Thanksgiving wknd with my family.......& not my twitter account."

Kellerman, who has been on the team for four years, is from South Carolina. Her profile on the Cowboys website says she is interested in being a child specialist and working in hospitals, an elementary special education teacher or a wedding event planner.

The Great One and The Great Daughter just hanging out. .. Apparently Wayne Gretzky would like his 22 year old daughter to spend more Hollywood Nights with him than posing for provocative pictures to post on line via Twitter.

Paulina Gretzky, the 22-year-old daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, had dabbled in pop music and acting before finding her true digital media calling: Posting provocative photos on social media. She never became a music sensation, but she became an Internet legend.

Paulina Gretzky's Twitter feed has been deleted, and David Graham of the Toronto Star pieces together a timeline that suggests Wayne Gretzky may have encouraged it?

Maybe the same way that the Dallas Cowboys did not force Melissa Kellerman to shut down her Twitter account but may have encouraged it.

One person of the New Everyday Media you can count on to continue to follow on Twitter, FaceBook, and various blogs around his 3 a.m. TV show Red Eye and his other new TV show he co-hosts at 5 p.m. without being shutdown or suspended is the feature of the L.A. Times Entertainment section this past Sunday.

Provocative?! Just look at this pic of Greg Gutfeld when he was Senior Editor of Men's Health Magazine. Of course, Greg is now a fashionista looking like he's right out of Picadilly Square or some bar Chelsea bar in Manhattan but nevertheless he is inspiration for New Media Madness: an everyday art. If I could have an editor, I'd have Greg over me on many long nights and early mornings.

The conversation with Greg Gutfeld in the L.A. Times does a decent job depicting his provocative genius that defies everything out dated and boring about the NEWS and multi media that some of get sick of being spoonfed like arrogance from a pulpit you're paying lots of money to endure.

Sure, you can change the channel on Greg if you'd rather have someone in a suit sitting in an old comfy anchor chair behind a dazzling desk speaking at you = however ratings show that a lot of us would rather join in on the conversation with Greg Gutfeld and his new everyday media outlets = as Greg's 3 a.m. show Red Eye (which airs at 3 a.m.) makes toast out of any other NEWS show on Prime-Time other than Billy O'Reilly's show.

I surely don't agree with everything Fox News Channel does but I do agree with its decision to give Greg Gutfeld the space & freedom to do his thing. ..

so i met this girl on the telephone by accident when she called our place in West College actually for a friend in the hockey house next door. .. i find myself going to Phili w/ a friend who lived off Phili's Main Line and that was my destination so I could meet-up with this girl on the phone and hang out at the all girls Harcum College on Phili's main line. .. After a fun night as an overnight (snuck-in) guest at Harcum with a couple lovely coed hosts = the next morning in Coma from teh drinks I had  the nite before my hockey friend informs me that his dad's car dealership has season tix and why not catch the Phili Vs. Pittsburgh game? It would be fun + he heard Mario was returning to the ice after a recent absence. .. Sure, why not? The way the sun was coming into the Spectrum on this hockey afternoon was just looking so cool, so right, while I washed away my Coma with ice cold beers. .. Seeing Mario on the ice was always magical. .. And, I knew it was there = the energy. .. At one point, my MainLine Phili friend said, "man, you better calm down.  ..these fans aren't gonna like it." ... "It's OK, man." I felt just as safe as I did "sneaking" into the space outside the doors of  the Penguins locker-room in the Civic Arena as a kid = seeing familiar faces looking over me while I wait for Pat Price, Paul Baxter, Mike Bullard, George Feurgoson, Bobby Simpson --- and just as safe as I felt skating the little rink in Mt. All that faded into memory

Are we really who we used to be
Am I really who I was

The lights will draw you in
And the dark will bring you down

Like bags of trash in the blackening snow
City of neon and toes that freeze
We’ve got nothing and nowhere to go
We’ve got nothing and nowhere

But only if you’re lucky now

The Jayhawks peform "Tiny Arrows" on Soundcheck in The Greene Space

Wandered through the desert
Looking for my way
Under rocks and houses
Snakes burn in the day
Coyote is howling
In the mountains far away

Dusty winters
Leave what's left behind
There are no reasons
To find what I call mine
Fences mean nothing
The sunrise disappears

Sit and watch the river flow
Try and touch the sky

And I don't mind
The sound of the song bird trying
Follow what you can find
Childhood washed away
Where did it go?
Where, where did it go?

The wind is whistling
Coats are buttoned high
Funny people
With nowhere left to hide
The canyon caravan
Rolls along

Sit and watch the river flow
Try and touch the sky

And I don't mind
The sound of the song bird trying
Follow what you can find
Childhood washed away
Where did it go?
Where, where did it go?

Didn't know those tiny arrows
Made of metal, pierced the heart
Didn't know those tiny arrows
Made of metal, pierced the heart
I didn't know those tiny arrows
Made of metal, pierced the heart

Sit and watch the river flow
Try and touch the sky

And I don't mind
The sound of the song bird trying
Follow what you can find
Childhood washed away
Where did it go?
Where, where did it go?

The American professional surfer broke the world record for "Largest Wave Surfed" by conquering a 90 foot behemoth. "Extreme" doesn't quite do this feat justice.

To rise and fall
without the hands of gravity
to see it all
my hand to cover up my eyes
to move inside
suspended by my sense of self
along the line
the river flows and so do I

and Charles Atlas stands upon the beach
upon his head and says
I will not fall
I will not fall
I will not fall

to live the groove
is everything that I need
to see you move
when grace is just a simple wisdom
to feel
to live
to speak the truth at every junction
to be with you
and with myself and my suspicion

and Charles Atlas stands upon the beach
upon his head and says
I will not fall
I will not fall
I will not fall

and Charles Atlas stands upon the beach
upon his head and says
I will not fall
I will not fall
I will not fall

I, I, I, I, I will not fall

Interview with Jim Morrison's father and sister

"Whoever controls the media controls the mind" --- Jim Morrison

The Rolling Stones Before They Make Me Run San Diego 1994

This is about the Rock and Roll lifestyle that got Keith Richards in trouble. The song was recorded while he was out on bail after getting caught with heroin and arrested for drug trafficking in Toronto in 1977. He was found guilty of the lesser charge of heroin possession, and sentenced to probation.Richards sang lead and did the majority of the work on this song. With Keith's drug charges pending, Mick Jagger took a lot of control on the album, but this song was pretty much all Keith. The original title was "Rotten Roll."Richard's vocals were double-tracked to make them stand out.The first bit of the song is about the drug death of Richard's friend Gram Parsons. An engineer named Dave Jordan helped mix this song. He went on to work with groups like The Specials and The Pogues.

Working Class Hero - John Lennon

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty hard years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams on their Halloween Costumes

OK, now that I got your attention with this trashy provocative piece where two stars and gentle souls are stalked and hunted down like animals for having the nerve to do what they do (and well) and be together outside of their home in public. This is what I really wanted to say especially after posting RYan doing Gram Parson's Grevious Angel w/ Emmylou on my facebook. ..

The Grilled Cheese Truck: When "Really Cheesy" is a Great Thing

The land of glittery tans and silicon dreams, Los Angeles is no stranger to the many manifestations of cheesy. Meet Dave Danhi, President and Executive Chef of The Grilled Cheese Truck, one of the country's most celebrated food trucks. Here, he talks to Poor Taste about his appetite for seafood, what he loves most about Los Angeles, and the perfect grilled cheese.
What inspired the idea of The Grilled Cheese Truck? "A friend of mine sent me an invite to The Grilled Cheese Invitational back in 2009 and I realized I had never competed in the food competition in all the years that I had been a chef. I went and there was a line over a mile long and over five people wide and that's when I realized that there is such a large grilled cheese food following."

What about the grilled cheese sandwich do you think attracts such a large following? "What I try to bring it back to and one of the reasons for our success is that grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food and everybody in this country was brought up with a grilled cheese sandwich. We take their childhood food memories and feed their adult palettes. It makes them feel like kids again."

What is your second favorite way to savor cheese? "I'm a purist when it comes to that. I love just a cheese board with cheese at the right temperature and some good, crunchy bread. I love to hit the cheese tastings in Los Angeles."
What makes or breaks a grilled cheese sandwich? "Some people are purists and when I talk to them it's cheddar and bacon, cheese and bread. For me, being the chef, it's a good marriage of flavors and textures– but it's got to be cooked correctly. I feel very strongly that the butter needs to be put onto the bread rather than onto the pan because when you put it on the pan the sandwich feels greasy. I have two people that spend time just buttering the bread."

"We have to re-impress everyone every day. We're the second most followed truck in the country next to Kogi, and never do we assume that there's going to be a line in front of the truck. The goal is to keep impressing people."

As a food innovator in Los Angeles, what do you like about your city? "I like that Los Angeles is so casual and that I don't have to be in a suit and tie in order to eat at a fancy restaurant. One of my biggest reasons as a chef is that the produce here is at the top of the list and the seafood is the best in the country–whether it's the fish markets, the farmer's markets, or the local purveyors."

What about Los Angeles makes it such a promising breeding ground for new food trucks? "One of the reasons is that we're a very spread out city–we're more a horizontal city than a vertical city and I think that has helped with the food trucks, but to be honest with you I think it's more a national thing. This country has never had a large street food culture and I think the country has been dying for a street food culture and due to the economy, people can now go to date-night for 25 dollars."

OK, so 50 of these wild animals have already been shot dead by local officials and now they're calling in the Columbus, OH Zoo to help. ..help shoot the other 30 or so wild animals loose from the Zanesville property w/ tranquilizers so they can preserve their lives and take care of them properly. .. And now Jack Hanna has been called on to help this wild and dangerous (for all involved) situation.
HOWEVER, first Jack Hanna is going to be stopping by Fox and Friends this morn so he can "tell us" what he's "going to do" to help. ..
Being about 100 miles from Zanesville which is nothing for a Grizzly and other wild animals to roam and, for the safety of these innocent animals that were held captive and found themselves free after the murder of their owner, I'd be a lot cooler w/ Jack Hanna getting his expertise to Zanesville pronto and skipping this media opportunity until everything is settled.

it's alright
you won't set the kids on fire
oh but i might
Ho

it's all right
it's all right

Last nite on the back porch while listening to an NPR interview with Mark Olson and Gary Louris on the new and, with patients & understanding, long awaited Jayhawks album --- And they were politely honestly answering the tough questions of a soundingly smart & cute female interviewer - commenting how not having the big hit on the radio and being bigger than what they had become is probably the reality of their longevity and beautiful rabid fanbase = Well, even though Wilco's new album is strangely on the Billboard charts upon its release - I think this odd premise rings true for them too. .. (like a couple others we may know, Ho). ..

This video of Wilco frotman Jefff Tweedy makes me smile and compelled me to grab the heavy Ralph Lauren whiskey drinking glass and my acoustic six string guitar and hit the back porch so I too can smile like this. .. Mike, so how about those bass players who play guitar??? (first few seconds do focus into a sure shot) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfKj-GflL4Y&feature=related

The New York Times Sunday edition during football season. ..

One of the great things about The New York Times Sunday edition during football season is that you can read it while the Steelers lose in the fashion they did to the Houston Texans (or Baltimore) and yet you don't feel completely depleted, dejected, devastated - there's a "fortune inside your head" filled with all these interesting things. ..

Sunday there was a nice little piece about a new Documentary on FishBone called Everyday Sunshine which is narrated by Laurence Fishburne (FishBone & Fishburne. .. Coincidence????) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChXk4R0mGNw
