Six O'Clock Whistle

Everyday the six o'clock whistle would blow
The location of the whistle was a few blocks
Away from the house I called home all my life
Until I moved out however the house my father
Once lived was located right at the corner where
The six o'clock whistle blew each & everyday
And could be heard on the hill & down in town
During the winter months it may have indicated
A start of a street hockey game until homework
Or in the summer months signify the calming of
A brilliant dusk above the river & over the valley
I loved the town I grew-up in and parents still live
My father settled there after leaving a little village
In Italy as did a lot of others did from his village
Settling in the same town or neighboring towns and
Providing me with the fortunate and secure sense
Of good friends & family I learned to love & respect
My mother grew-up in this town as well and also
Had a large network of family and friends who were
Active and also provided me with security and love
Nowadays I live just a few towns over and up the river
Where there are also big hills & trains that run along
And there is a whistle that blows at 9:45 p.m. for
Some sort of curfew, I believe, and I live closer to it
And our dog barks and howls everytime he hears it
Which makes my wife say he acts like it's the first
I miss the six o'clock whistle and hearing it howl
While inside my parent's home watching local news
Yet indeed I'm quite certain I'd miss the 9:45 too
And so I look forward to hearing it blare every evening

All About Organic Cotton


What is organic cotton?Organically grown cotton has been produced without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. A field must be pesticide free for three years for the cotton to be certified organic, therefore, it is safe for consumers, the farmers and workers who grow it, and the natural environment.


Why is organic cotton important?


Non-organically (conventionally) grown cotton can cause irreparable damage to the natural environment and to farm workers, and may contaminate drinking water. Organic farming methods actually help regenerate soil that has been damaged by overuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Do conventional (non-organic) cotton farmers really use many chemicals?


Unfortunately, yes. It takes 2/3 of a pound of pesticides to make one pair of jeans, and 1/3 of a pound to make a single T-shirt. Conventional cotton accounts for 10% of global pesticide use. The EPA says that conventional agriculture is responsible for 70% of all problems in U.S. rivers and streams.

Can any of these chemicals cause cancer?


Yes. According to the EPA, five of the top nine pesticides used in cotton production in the US (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin) are known cancer-causing chemicals. All five are classified as Category I and II, the most dangerous of chemicals, by the EPA.






Sustainable Cotton Project (SCP)


Located in California's Central Valley, the world's most productive agricultural region, the Sustainable Cotton Project (SCP) focuses on the production and use of cotton, one of the most widely grown and chemical-intensive crops in the world.


Since 1996, SCP has brought farmers, manufacturers, and consumers together. SCP's guiding philosophy of "cooperation for a change" fosters information-sharing among these groups to develop a Cleaner Cotton™ industry.


In 2003, SCP joined the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) to strengthen its operations and reach other farm and consumer audiences. CAFF and SCP provide growers with information about biological farming techniques and educate the public about the importance of reducing chemical use in fiber and food production and supporting local farmers.


Because of cotton's versatility, it is used for many food and fiber products, making it one of the most widely traded commodities on earth. Yet the simple act of growing and harvesting one pound of cotton fiber to make a T-shirt takes a toll on the earth’s air, water, and soil, and has significant impacts on the health of people in cotton growing areas.


Cotton cultivation uses approximately 11% of the world’s pesticides, though it is grown on just 2.4% of the world’s arable land12. Some of these chemicals are classified as toxic or carcinogenic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In developing countries, where regulations are less stringent, the negative impacts are more severe.

Déborah François =

Belgian actress Déborah François made her film debut in the Dardenne Brother's L/Enfant (The Child). The film won the Golden Palm at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. François won the Joseph Plateau Award for Best Belgian Actress for her portrayal of a teen mother whose infant is kidnapped by her boyfriend. She was also nominated for a Cesar for Most Promising Actress for her performance.

Déborah François's second role was equally performance. She stars as Mélanie Prouvost, a self possessed young woman, who quietly sets out to destroy a concert pianist's life in Denis Dercourt's chilling thriller La Tourneuse de pages (The Page Turner). Francois received her second Cesar nomination Most Promising Actress.

She has recently finished production in two upcoming films: Stéphan Carpiaux's Les Fourmis rouges (Red Ants) and Alain Raoust's L'Été indien.

Denis Dercourt’s stylish, subtle and highly assured film is a pleasingly suspenseful psychological drama in the style of Hitchcock or early Chabrol. Déborah François plays Mélanie, the smalltown butcher’s daughter whose ambitions as a pianist were dashed during a childhood audition for the Conservatory when one of the jurors, famous concert pianist Ariane Fouchécourt (Catherine Frot), distracted her by signing an autograph. A decade after this unwitting but fateful slight, shy, quiet Mélanie happens to find herself working as an intern for the law firm owned by Fouchécourt’s husband Jean (Pascal Greggory). Her diligence and dependability lead him to hire her as a governess to his son, and soon enough she’s firmly ensconced in their home and helping out as Ariane’s page-turner as the pianist prepares for a big comeback concert. Is Mélanie plotting revenge? Nursing a crush – and if so, on whom? Or is she merely hoping to bask in some reflected glory?

Déborah François

Dercourt’s cool, extremely elegant and often witty film remains admirably ambiguous until the very final scenes, and even then the script wisely foregoes tying up too many loose ends. It’s a meticulous piece of work, beautifully shot by Jérôme Peyrebrune, and assembled with a proper understanding of music and the important role it can play in people’s lives. In building both narrative tension and psychological resonance, Dercourt is helped no end by the excellent performances, most particularly that of young François, quite superb in only her second movie after an excellent (but very different) debut role in the Dardennes’ ‘The Child’.

Red Eye host, Greg Gutfeld, pointed out what men most likely find fascinating with Scarlett Johansson which then makes us just plain fascinated with Scarlett Johansson and thus we would read, listen to or watch whatever she is doing ...

Uhmn, agreed - but ...




I was interested in how Scarlett Johansson is utilizing blogging as part of the new everyday media and, of course, just as interested in her everyday life - so I did a search. Well, while searching for her blog, I became distracted by photographs of Scarlett Johansson - and, really, how a pair of colors just seem to "pop" in such a captivating and compelling way ...

During this time of searching and looking at Scarlett Johansson pics I was also watching cable news where I find many of the women also captivating and compelling in their own intellectual, dynamic and engaging HOT way ...

So even though I consider Scarlett Johansson a part of the New Everyday Media = as film making, art, music, journalism, writing, blogging, etc. is all about propagating something ... (for instance consider this --- when watching the Doors movie - when Jim is seducing Pam on a rooftop where he is staying there are books and their titles shown by candlelight and moonlight and one of them is "Understanding Mass Media" ... Jim was a film maker, a writer and a musician but also part of the new everyday media for his time and, for that matter, ahead of his time) ...

in any event, how does Scarlett Johansson rate with these other Women of the the New Everyday Media ? ...
