'Remarkable' cell-switching research holds promise

Using a cocktail of proteins inserted directly into the bodies of diabetic mice, researchers have converted normal pancreas cells into insulin-producing cells using a procedure that could pave the way for treating intractable diseases and injuries using the patient's own abundant store of healthy tissue.
The Harvard University scientists activated a trio of dormant genes that commanded the cells to transform themselves, much like loading a new operating system onto a computer.
Within 10 days, the pancreas cells ceased their normal function - making gut enzymes to digest food - and instead produced insulin to regulate blood sugar, according to a study online Wednesday in the journal Nature. Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the study's senior author, said the same approach could be used to generate motor neurons for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, make cardiac muscle cells for heart attack victims or create other crucial cells that can repair damage wrought by a range of illnesses.

Crucified frog has Pope hopping mad

By Philip Pullella in Rome

A MODERN art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that Pope Benedict has condemned as blasphemous may have its days numbered.

The board of the Museion museum in the northern city of Bolzano were meeting on Thursday to choose whether to side with the pope and other opponents of the frog or with proponents who say it should be defended as a work of art.

The wooden sculpture by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger depicts a frog about 1.3m high nailed to brown cross and holding a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in another. Called Zuerst die Fuesse, (Feet First), it wears a green loin cloth and is nailed through the hands and the feet in the manner of Jesus Christ. Its green tongue hangs out of its mouth.

Kippenberger's work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the Venice Biennale, and retrospectives are planned in Los Angeles and New York. Museum officials in the northern bi-lingual Alto Adige region near the Austrian border said the artist, who died in 1997, considered it a self-portrait illustrating human angst. Pope Benedict, who is German himself and was recently on holiday not far from Bolzano, obviously did not agree. The Vatican wrote a letter of support in the pope's name to Franz Pahl, president of the regional government who opposed the sculpture.

"Surely this is not a work of art but a blashphemy and a disgusting piece of trash that upsets many people," Mr Pahl said as the museum board was meeting. The Vatican letter said that the work "wounds the religious sentiments of so many people who see in the cross the symbol of God's love".

Mr Pahl, whose province is heavily Catholic, was so outraged by the sculpture of the pop-eyed amphibian that he went on a hunger strike to demand its removal and had to be taken to hospital during the summer. The museum then moved the statue out of its foyer and into a less trafficked area on the third floor. But Pahl's opposition was unflagging and he has threatened to resign as regional president unless it is removed altogether.

Art experts defend the work. "Art must always be free and the artist should not have any restrictions on freedom of expression," Claudio Strinati, a superindendent for Rome's state museums, told an Italian newspaper on Thursday.

LE GUN #4 promises a rich and slippery harvest of pictures and words, a catch that includes Polish artist-crustacean Andrzej Klimowski, Will Sweeney, creator of 'Tales of Green Fuzz', visionary draughtsman Paul Noble, and writing from beat generation expert Barry Miles and dandy of the underworld Sebastian Horsley, as well as fresh fruit from young novelist Richard Milward, grubby texts from Iain Sinclair and the 'Hunter S Thompson of Hartlepool', Michael Smith.
The exhibition will feature the collective's large scale drawings, forming a physical embodiment of the work found on the pages of LE GUN. These drawings, some up to 10m in length, are collaborative, narrative panoramas that link together to tell a curious tale...
LE GUN 'THE FAMILY' will also feature a 'salon wall' of works by artists working with LE GUN, and our cardboard-constructed 'arts club' installation that will host a wonderful, eccentric bar created by The Dog & Wardrobe plus performance and screening area.
The exhibition will run for just over one week and in that time a number of events such as music nights and short film screenings will be programmed, creating a temporary arts club. Highlights include screening the 'Essentials' programme of seminal short film curated by the Independent Cinema Office. This will coincide with Soup Session, hosted by Jessica Antwi-Boasiako.

"Suits Are Picking up The Bill" --- Is There a Valid Theme Here???

Promo video for the song "Suits Are Picking Up The Bill "

While watching the DNC coverage at a V.P.'s home of a publicly traded company - after everyone else had left and we were just chilling out and catching-up a bit - this song kept going through my head and did so the whole way home - And, then, still the same while I continued to watch more of the DNC coverage from my own home.

I think there's a theme here - all the way around for tonight - when I think of tonight- it's theme is: "the suits are picking up the bill"

...Really, think about it!

...all the CNN coverage, the FNC coverage, the CBS, NBC, CNBC, BBC = who's picking-up the bill? The suits - that's who.

And in hotels, bars and restaurants and strip clubs across Denver - who's picking-up the bill? The suits that's who!

And all across the country who's picking-up the bill and will continue to do so???

... Democrat or Republican - either way, "the suits are picking-up the bill."

Hi Gretchen,

...so, Stephanie, the "good producer," ....the one helping you w/ this engagingly savvy Face Book strategy  ... is she hot too?

i'd like to see a little more into that control room.

"control room."

gee, i wonder the things that are said into Brian Kilmead's ear from there.

one Saturday while a guest/fill-in co-host on F&F Weekend Greg Gutfeld just took his piece out (ear piece that is) and like Clayton or Dave had to tell him that he needed to put it back in so he could hear what was going on from the "control room."

Please note though, out of all the shows I watch, most of the time, I feel F&F is one of the most liberated and that it definitely does know what the hell it's doing and what some fat & bald loser like me wants to see on TV.

I do get frustrated though w/ the limits, the parameters, the old rules, standard rules - what "they" think is gonna be great, worth while, "NEWS worthy," good for America, society, hummanity, civilization.

"Whoever controls the media controls the mind" ... James Douglas Morrison _ (Jeem)

I know I'd be doing some "ground breaking" moves = "throwing 7 kinds of smoke" ... and winning Emmy's for it _ eventually _ after the smoke settles and no one could deny what it is I have really done.

Face Book Strategy: Fox & Friends _ (And Master Peter Doocy)_ PLUS, CNN's "IReport" Everyday Sunshine"

Steve,

I think it's a great strategy for Fox & Friends folks to be on Face Book and actually become friends w/ your viewers = That's just another step in really engaging your viewers (existing and potential) --- and letting them know that you all do realize they are not just zombies who are blindly watching TV --- that they have a chance to get heard an be heard and be a part of a special process and be part pf a special time in history everyday ....

Moreover, it shows that you all are not just pompous wind-bags and talking heads that are out-of-touch and do not care about us (your fans in TV land = the general public = the everyday people who lift America up to its actual greatness everyday = and go unreported and unnoticed though mostly because of the producers and writers not wanting to give up control and break on through and create something different we can all experience like communion from good stories about everyday people that may help us realize we all could use this crowd consciousness for good instead of propagating fear, hate and greed, discontent and mistrust) ....

The other day I saw that Robin Meade was doing something called "IReport" Everyday Sunshine" = where she asks us to video our everyday routine while watching her on CNN's Headline NEWS = I thought that was brilliant = for the same reasons I listed about your FB strategy.

And, yet, Anna Gilligan has ingored two requests to be a friend = Well, yeah, that's not good and has altered my perception of her which makes me form opinions and like her less = Obviously (I'm only human, man).

As for Master Peter Doocy I obliged w/ his request and sent in to be his friend and gave questions I'd like him to ask the presidential candidates.

Do you think I should put this on my everyday blog? at http://theneweverydaymedia.blogspot.com/

Lastly, I'm glad Brian Kileade is back from whatever he was doing = (probably writing another amazing boook) ...
