Rebel as Poet: Rimbaud and Jim Morrison by Wallace Fowlie = Entertainment Weekly Book Review

I'll get to the online Entertainment Weekly Book Review in a second here.

This book that I have in our library has a personalized inscription inside by Wallace Fowlie that reads: "For John Alan Conte`, Jr., our frienship begun here - March 13 1996 Wallace Fowlie"

Rimbaud And Jim Morrison: The Rebel As Poet
Wallace Fowlie

By D.A. Ball
''Dear Wallace Fowlie...thanks for doing the Rimbaud translation...I am a rock singer and your book travels around with me.'' The 1968 note was signed Jim Morrison, but French literature professor Fowlie had no idea who that was. Like all good teachers, Fowlie asked his students and began applying his expertise to what they taught him. Twenty-six years later, the result is this lucid exploration of common ground between French symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud and rock poet Morrison: the myths surrounding each, the forces that drove their astonishingly brief careers, and their electrically terse word-pictures. Rimbaud And Jim Morrison: The Rebel As Poet is good old-fashioned scholarly criticism that illuminates the poetry instead of ego-lighting the critic. Some will find it densely academic. But Morrison reportedly once said, ''Let's just say I was testing the boundaries of reality,'' and Fowlie, now a Duke professor emeritus, is that rare academician who can truly help us savor what Jim Morrison meant. On the Street A Show of Legs in Paris

The look in Paris on the thousands of women gathered for the recent designer shows was all about legs and their coverings.

Is Paris cooler or hotter than New York?

Subject: Jeffrey Miron on CNN's AM w/ Kiran Chetry About Legalizing All Drugs

Hi Kiran:

Your interview with Jeffrey Miron was very enlightening.

It's not everyday a rockstar Harvard economist talks about why we need to legalize all drugs and, moreover, on an international platform such as CNN's AM.

Of course, I agree with Jeffrey Miron's points in regards to reducing demand for illegal drugs and suppliers by making drugs legal. Yes, this would also reduce the horrid violence of the underground - as drugs being illegal puts it in the underground world like alcohol in prohibition - and all their problems are solved with guns and violence as opposed to lawyers and marketing.

However, Jeffrey Miron and you didn't even get into how legalizing drugs would eliminate the big waste of tax payor dollars as we would no longer have to fund the "war on drugs" and all the court costs and prison costs of punishing people for doing, possessing and selling drugs (and then all the problems that come with it being illegal and underground like turf wars, kidnappings, drive by shootings, etc.).

I applaud your progressiveness --- giving Mr. Miron an international platform and I hope that your colleagues --- and I hope that more of your colleagues of the new everyday media give Mr. Miron and his thought provoking arguments a similar platform.

John French

"The Fempire" - an Entourage of Their Own ...

Movie writers who are best friends: from left, Lorene Scafaria, Diablo Cody, Dana Fox and Liz Meriwether with, from left in front, Ronja and Luca

You can find them at work in their Laurel Canyon homes in their pajamas, or sitting next to one another at laptop-friendly restaurants. To see them gathered amid the dinosaur topiary around Ms. Fox’s swimming pool with their dogs (they all have dogs) is to see four distinct styles of glamour that bear little resemblance to traditional images of behind-the-scenes talent. Whenever one of them has a movie opening, they all rent a white limousine and go from theater to theater to watch the first audiences react.

“We’re usually drunk by the third theater,” Ms. Cody said. “It’s super porno and tacky, and we love doing it.”

It sounds like fun and games — the boozy, all-woman answer to those close-knit gangs of Hollywood boy-men captured on screen in “Entourage” and embodied by the real-life Apatown, the industry moniker for filmmaker Judd Apatow’s coterie of actors and screenwriters including Paul Rudd, Jason Segel and Seth Rogen. But these women also work hard: Ms. Cody, Ms. Fox and Ms. Scafaria can command seven figures to write a movie that makes it into theaters with big stars. Ms. Meriwether (the others call her “the freshman”) is on her way to joining them. That’s no small achievement when you consider that among the screenwriters who are in steady demand for major projects, only about 20 are women. Don’t even try to credit their bankability to their looks.

“The way they live their lives was a good example of how to work and live as a female screenwriter in L.A.,” said Ms. Meriwether, 27, who moved to Laurel Canyon last fall. “Movies have always been written by groups of people, and it goes along well with the writing process to have people to bounce things off of.”

Michelle Obama Plants Organic Vegtable Garden at White House

Michelle Obama starts White House vegetable garden
20 Mar 2009 Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) - First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on a new White House vegetable garden on Friday, digging a plot on the mansion's south lawn to help provide her children and visitors with fresh, healthy food.

Obama, who has made a point of reaching out to the local Washington community since her husband's inauguration, gathered about two dozen local school school children to dig up the patch, which will be the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a "victory garden" during World War Two.

"I want to make sure that our family, as well as the staff and all the people who come to the White House and eat our food, get access to really fresh vegetables and fruits," Obama said.

"What I found with my girls, who are 10 and seven, is that they like vegetables more if they taste good."

She said they were also going to have a beehive -- an idea that did not thrill daughters Sasha and Malia.

"My kids aren't very excited about the beehive," she said. "But we're going to try to make our own honey here."

The garden, which will be organic, will be planted later in the spring and will include berries and mint in addition to vegetables. It is being started as the country faces an epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

Sam Kass, an assistant chef, said the White House hoped to have a year-round garden and planned to share some of the produce with a local soup kitchen.

Spinach, peas, fennel and squash would all feature in the garden, he said. The garden will produce up to as many as 55 different fruits and vegetables.

The garden was hailed as a victory by Kitchen Gardeners International, an organization of gardeners who promote home-grown food, which attracted some 100,000 people to sign its online petition asking the Obamas to plant a vegetable garden at the White House.
