Penn State Crushes Coastal Carolina 66-10 = by Sports Guru Brian Kilmeade (Author of The Games Do Count)
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Quarterback Daryll Clark and coach Joe Paterno, the young and old faces of the Penn State football program, each made some history Saturday.
For Clark, a senior who will have eligibility through next season, a 66-10 win over Coastal Carolina was his first start and first victory. For Paterno, in his 43rd season as head coach, it was win No. 373, tying him with Florida State's Bobby Bowden for first place all-time among major college coaches.
It's fair to say the two had differing takes on their historic moments.
Clark eagerly recounted the traditional bus ride to Beaver Stadium, with the starting quarterback seated up front, as is the custom, with Paterno.
"You start seeing a lot of the fans cheering and screaming. You finally get to the part where we stop and get off the bus and the door opened and I looked out and I'm like, 'It's here. It's here,' " Clark said. "I'll never forget this feeling that I had in the morning. I was excited, anxious, nervous, everything. But the time is now, man, and I'm just going to have to keep working hard and hopefully everything goes well this season because I feel like we have a real special thing going right now."
Paterno's message on the bus ride was simple, according to the quarterback.
"Just do what you do at practice and everything will be fine," Clark said. "That made me feel good."

“the American Promise" _ Obama Promises He Can Deliver Change
Denver, Colo. — Barack Obama urged Americans today to believe that he had the capability to deliver on the promise of change to the nation and the world that attracted millions to his historic campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.In becoming the first African-American, major-party presidential nominee, the Illinois senator also called for a politically united nation to confront the economic and national security problems that await the next president in January.
“America, our work will not be easy,” Obama told an audience of roughly 84,000 at Invesco Field at Mile High as the Democratic National Convention in Denver came to a close. “The challenges we face require tough choices, and Democrats, as well as Republicans, will need to cast off the worn-out ideas and politics of the past.”
In accepting the nomination, Obama symbolically ended a grueling, 19-month nominating campaign that was first stamped by his decisive win in Iowa’s leadoff nominating caucuses in January .
And with just 68 days until the election, Obama launched a full-throated attack of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. Obama painted his rival as an ally of President Bush on key economic and national security issues.Obama said McCain, who is scheduled to accept the GOP nomination in St. Paul next week, is to be respected for his military service. The Arizona senator is a Vietnam War veteran and former prisoner of war.
Obama’s campaign moved the convention’s final day from the Pepsi Center arena to the football stadium to allow thousands more people to attend.

The significance of Obama’s landmark nomination was punctuated by his acceptance speech given on the 45th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King’s iconic “I have a dream speech” in 1965. The timing was a coincidence, considering the convention had been scheduled for months, before the nominee was decided.Obama invoked the moment as a reminder of what he called “the American promise.”
“At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise – that American promise – and in the words of Scripture, 'Hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.’
”Cedar Rapids Democrat Dale Todd, an early supporter of Obama in Iowa, described the speech as groundbreaking. “It established for the Democratic Party a new culture of political leadership,” he said. “How we govern as a country and how we are seen in the world’s eye will be fundamentally different from here out.”
Des Moines Democrat Jerry Crawford, who was a leading supporter of Hillary Clinton, described the speech as politically savvy. “It was plain spoken, policy driven and had a lot of great lines,” Crawford said.
“Obama knows what is coming at him next week and he wisely threw the first punch.” Ames delegate Stephanie Imhoff said the speech had people of all ages around her in the stadium in tears. Obama’s call to Americans to join together was most meaningful point he made, she said.

Using a cocktail of proteins inserted directly into the bodies of diabetic mice, researchers have converted normal pancreas cells into insulin-producing cells using a procedure that could pave the way for treating intractable diseases and injuries using the patient's own abundant store of healthy tissue.
The Harvard University scientists activated a trio of dormant genes that commanded the cells to transform themselves, much like loading a new operating system onto a computer.
Within 10 days, the pancreas cells ceased their normal function - making gut enzymes to digest food - and instead produced insulin to regulate blood sugar, according to a study online Wednesday in the journal Nature. Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the study's senior author, said the same approach could be used to generate motor neurons for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, make cardiac muscle cells for heart attack victims or create other crucial cells that can repair damage wrought by a range of illnesses.

Crucified frog has Pope hopping mad

A MODERN art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that Pope Benedict has condemned as blasphemous may have its days numbered.
The board of the Museion museum in the northern city of Bolzano were meeting on Thursday to choose whether to side with the pope and other opponents of the frog or with proponents who say it should be defended as a work of art.
The wooden sculpture by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger depicts a frog about 1.3m high nailed to brown cross and holding a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in another. Called Zuerst die Fuesse, (Feet First), it wears a green loin cloth and is nailed through the hands and the feet in the manner of Jesus Christ. Its green tongue hangs out of its mouth.
Kippenberger's work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the Venice Biennale, and retrospectives are planned in Los Angeles and New York. Museum officials in the northern bi-lingual Alto Adige region near the Austrian border said the artist, who died in 1997, considered it a self-portrait illustrating human angst. Pope Benedict, who is German himself and was recently on holiday not far from Bolzano, obviously did not agree. The Vatican wrote a letter of support in the pope's name to Franz Pahl, president of the regional government who opposed the sculpture.
"Surely this is not a work of art but a blashphemy and a disgusting piece of trash that upsets many people," Mr Pahl said as the museum board was meeting. The Vatican letter said that the work "wounds the religious sentiments of so many people who see in the cross the symbol of God's love".
Mr Pahl, whose province is heavily Catholic, was so outraged by the sculpture of the pop-eyed amphibian that he went on a hunger strike to demand its removal and had to be taken to hospital during the summer. The museum then moved the statue out of its foyer and into a less trafficked area on the third floor. But Pahl's opposition was unflagging and he has threatened to resign as regional president unless it is removed altogether.
Art experts defend the work. "Art must always be free and the artist should not have any restrictions on freedom of expression," Claudio Strinati, a superindendent for Rome's state museums, told an Italian newspaper on Thursday.
